The Ostry Farm

Barn Relocation

In the 1980s, Herman and Donna Ostry bought a farm about half-a-mile outside Bruno, Nebraska. Because the barn was near a creek, the floor was often muddy and wet. One year, when the creek flooded and left 29 inches of water in his barn, Herman decided that something had to be done.

At supper one night, Herman joked to his family, “I’ll bet if we had enough people, we could just pick up that barn and carry it to higher ground.” Herman’s son, Mike, however, took the idea seriously and designed and welded a grid of steel lifting handles that fit all around the barn. After calculating the boards, timber, and steel handles, he estimated the barn’s weight at almost ten tons, which meant that each person would need to lift about 55 pounds.

The little town of Bruno was already planning its centennial that summer, so they decided to make the moving of Ostry’s barn part of the official celebration. On July 30, 1988, local TV cameramen were on hand, along with 4,000 spectators. Following directions shouted through a bullhorn, 344 volunteers lifted in unison. The crowd then applauded as the team moved the barn 115 feet to higher ground in three minutes.

It’s amazing what people can accomplish when they all work together, such as when the Jewish people rebuilt the wall around the entire city of Jerusalem. “So we built the wall, … for the people had a mind to work…. So the wall was finished … in fifty-two days” (Nehemiah 4:6; 6:15).
